Grass Growing Graph

Broad Question

What is the best direction for grass to grow north, east, south, west?

Specific Question

Does grass go taller in a certian direction?

Variables

Independent Variable:

Sun light

Dependent Variable:

Grass height

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

watering, picture taking, and measuring

Hypothesis

I think that south is the best direction for grass to grow because if you go way north you start seeing less and less grass.

General Plan

First, I will go to Wal-Mart to get my supplies. Then, I will go to the gardening section and get four clear plastic planters (rectangle), soil, grass seeds, and four re-enforced screens. Next, I will pay for the supplies. After, I will go home and then take the supplies out of the bags. Next, I will put the soil in the planters 2in. from the the top. Then, I will put 4cm. deep holes in the soil 3cm apart and put the seeds in the holes. Later, I will water the plants and put the plants in the sun on a window sill facing the right direction and put the re-enfoced screens on the top. Lastly, I will measure and take pictures of the process every two days until i get to the six days then I will take a measurement two days each for four more days then add those measurements together to get the last measurement.

Experimental Design

I will conduct my experiment at my house. 3 people (one being me) are involved in my experiment. The roles are watering and picture taking. I will only need one trial to make a reliable conclusion. I will record my data directly on the computer. I will take notes of how I am doing the process and then later type what I did in the process.

Background Research

1st Source: Plants and Growth vol. 1 book
1st Information: Grass grows 1cm a day like your fingernails. Grass keeps growing even when you freshly cut it with the lawn mower. You may not notice, but the grass slowly rises. That is why you have to mow your lawn every two or three weeks depending on what type of grass it is.

2nd Information: Grasses or a more scientific term graminoids are usually herbaceous plants with narrow leaves growing from the roots or also called the base. Different types of grasses are papyrus, bamboo, cereals, and eleocharis dulcis which is translated to water chestnut. these types of grass and many others are useful for food such as grain, sprouted grain, shoots or rhizomes. They are also useful for drinks such as beer and whiskey, plus they can be made into paper, fuel, clothing, and many more things that are useful in daily life.
3rd Source: http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/grass.aspx
3rd Information: There are 600+ genera and 9,000+ species in the U.S. Big areas that have tall grass growing around the world are the prairies and plains in North America, savannas and pampas in South America, steppes and plains in Eurasia, and veldts in Africa.
4th Source:http://www.countrysideinfo.co.uk/grass_facts/index.htm
4th Information: Grasses can grow very tall from short lawn grass to the waist-high reeds and to the bamboo plants that reach to 40m (120ft) tall. An individual plant like the Red Fescue can spread via underground stems known as rhizomes. One single Red Fescue can cover (estimated) an area of 250m in diameter. If you think about in your head how old this plant is you will have to have a scientist to go analyze the plants annual growth rate and then the age of the individual can be estimated. The age of the individual plant just might be over 400 years old.
